Following water quality problems at Penllyn rivers, the long-awaited news that Welsh Water is to start investment at Y Bala’s waste treatment site, this month, is to be welcomed.
For some time, developments in the town of Bala have come to a halt due to concerns that there is a high level of phosphate in the rivers, which is detrimental to the environment. As the area around the River Dee is an area of special conservation, the authorities were unable to grant planning applications to erect houses, buildings and other investments in the area due to the impact on the environment.
Plaid Cymru County Councillor for the town, Dilwyn Morgan said: "I and my fellow councillors had a site visit with the Water Board approximately six months ago in order to discuss the implications of the problems and to hear of the solution plans that were in progress. It is particularly good news that a £6 million investment is taking place at the waste treatment site during the winter.
“This investment will increase the capacity and the ability to treat the town's waste, and I am sure that completing the work over the next 20 months will be a huge step forward for the community, for developments and to the local environment.
Fellow Plaid Cymru Councillor, Elwyn Edwards, Llandderfel said: "Environmentally, the work will help to improve the quality of the river's water which will in turn be a boost to wildlife in the Penllyn area. It also benefits the community in ensuring that the site will have the capacity to handle waste, should we see a growth in population, into the future.
Work on the site will begin in mid-November and will include upgrading and installing new assets and equipment on site to increase the amount of water waste treated at the centre.
“It is particularly good news for the area," said Plaid Cymru Councillor for Llanuwchllyn, Alan Jones Evans, who was also present during the site visit.
“We have spent some time with the economic future of Bala and Penllyn at a standstill due to the challenges facing the town with the water waste centre in its current form. I'm extremely pleased that this investment is being made and the local community and the town's businesses can look forward to a flourishing future.”
Mott McDonald Bentley, who is also currently carrying out work on a new auxiliary spillway at Llyn Celyn has the contract from Dŵr Cymru at the Bala site. There will be a compound area in the field next to the site and the team will work from Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm (it may be necessary to work later on the project and during weekends at specific times).
